( Adepti like him have been in touch with the Gods since long ago. They prefer contact with divinity over humanity, and though Xiao shares a similar belief, the world of humans is only a step away. He does not involve himself much with them, prefers to keep his distance for a multitude of reasons, but there are times, of course, that his presence among them brings discrepancies from both sides.
He finds that the presence of an Adeptus followed by an Archon amidst a crowd of humans to be far more distressing.
(But can he truly deny the wills and requests of the Anemo Archon? One who holds power far greater than his, still, could he truly defy his orders? It's not an order, Barbatos would likely say, but knows that there is nothing else Xiao could see it as.) )
... I fail to see what my presence here would amount to.
( Boisterous. This late at night, humans wash away their worries and concerns in a manner too carefree. When once they'd fear the Yaksha's presence among them, here they hardly pay any mind. Is his influence this meaningless in Mondstadt? )
You wished for me to be your bodyguard. What am I protecting you from?
( Rather— what is Xiao protecting the Anemo Archon from that he could not protect himself against? )
[ Even this many years later, Venti still thinks that it's funny, so funny, that Morax met someone like Xiao. They're so stiff and formal and bad at emotions in their own ways - Morax can blend in at high society parties but he would look ridiculous in a tavern. Xiao cannot blend in anywhere, he's too rough at the edges still, he hasn't socialized enough to tumble the edges into anything smoother, but they remind Venti of the other whenever he's near one of them.
'Like family,' Venti had told Morax once, and Morax had actually looked stricken and then thoughtful before not exactly brushing aside the suggestion.
So in a sense, perhaps Venti is sneaking Morax's adopted son into a tavern for some illicit wine-drinking, but that only makes this all the more exciting.
Venti sits at a table in the corner - he can accommodate some of the worst of Xiao's distaste for public spaces, at least - and gestures grandly to the seat across from himself. ] Oh! You're protecting me from the greatest threat of all. It's very common in taverns, in fact. [ Venti leans forward across the table - has to lift himself up out of his chair to do so, honestly, feet on the floor so he can arch in to whisper towards Xiao's ear: ]
From sitting alone at the bar!
[ From loneliness, actually - the one thing Venti, the powerful Anemo Archon, cannot protect himself against. But he beams at Xiao as he sits back into his seat as if playing a prank, not admitting to weakness. ] So you're already doing a great job!
